Why volunteer?

Based on a brochure from FCLC, one in five adults in Franklin County lack the skills to use reading, writing, speaking, and computational skills in everyday life situations. FCLC provides training, materials, and support to those students at no cost.

The literacy situation in the United States is dire-- nearly 30 million people over the age of sixteen can read no better than the average elementary school student. With current economic troubles, there are a lot of people out of work. Without basic literacy, however, they may find trouble gaining employment. This has a negative impact on the community. There is evidence that low literacy rates in an area coincide with higher levels of crime and human rights abuse.

So how can you help? Volunteer at the literacy council! With only a few hours a week, you can make a difference in someone's life.

As Margaret Mead once said:

"Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it's the only thing that ever has."
